Give us this day our daily bread (Petition)
We continue on the Lord’s prayer, we looked at adoration (which we said was acknowledging the supremacy of God) and went on to look at intercession, the act of standing in the gap for others. We know that it is important to intercede for others because the bible tells us Jesus is seated at the right hand of the father and He is continual interceding for us.
33 Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Romans 8: 33-34
Today we look at yet another part of the model prayer which is the prayer that Jesus taught His disciples, petition. Give us this day our daily bread. Isn’t interesting what Jesus said in Matthew 4:4
But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”
So how come two chapters down the line he is teaching His disciples that they should ask God for daily bread? He also told them that
8 “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.
If our father knows the things we need why then should we be praying to him? Well it is polite to ask, we know that from our human nature. When we need something we go and ask, children would ask their parents for things that they need even though the parents know they need them. It gives them pleasure to give them good gifts. Similarly, our Father in heaven wants us to ask him.
Go with me to Matthew 7:7
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? 11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!
Wow isn’t this amazing? He says if we who are evil know how to give good gifts to our children how much more will give good gifts to those who ask Him? We know that our God, our Father is a good good father who always has our best interests at heart. God has already set aside everything that we need but we have to get to the right place in order to enjoy those heavenly benefits here on earth.
Seek Ye First the Kingdom
Jesus said in Matthew 6:31-34:
31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
How do we seek the kingdom?
Jesus calls us to Him, we are to come to Him and lay our burden before Him, He wants to give us rest. In Matthew 11:28 Jesus says come to me all you who labour and are heavy burdened and I will give you rest.
1 Peter 5: 6-7
Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. We already know that our father loves us so much because John 3: 16 tells that for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son that whosever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. We have seen and heard that God says if we who are evil know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more will He give us perfect gifts in line with His perfect will. To experience that love and experience the kingdom I have to spend time in His presence, soak myself in his presence. The only way we can be able to soak ourselves in his presence is to know His perfect will. His Will is found in His Word. God commanded Joshua to be strong and courageous but above all He commands him to keep hold of His Word and meditate on it day and night, Joshua 1:
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
When we know His word we know Him, and when we know Him we know the truth, then when we know the truth we are free. Why are we free because Jesus said we shall know the truth and the truth shall set us free, and we know that the Truth is the Word of God which is Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.
When the scribes asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was, Jesus answered them in Mark 12: 29 Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. 31 And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
But do we really love our neighbour? Do we take time out to look around us and see what is happening? Are we too involved in our own needs that we forget the greatest commandment? We should really be seeking to see things with God eyes not our own fleshly eyes. Jesus loved us so much that He died on the cross for us. What are willing to do for Him. Are we willing to forsake all others and cling to Him who is the author and perfector of our lives?
What are your motives when you pray?
For we know that we have been given everything we need for life,
His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
It is about knowing how to ask and asking with the right motives. We know that everything is right there ready for us in the heavenly realms. Therefore our heart needs to align with the heart and the will of Christ. Let’s take a look at Solomon, he didn’t ask for riches but asked God for wisdom. What did he get together with the wisdom? Let’s see what the bible says in 2 Chronicles 1:7
And Solomon said to God: “You have shown great mercy to David my father, and have made me king in his place. 9 Now, O Lord God, let Your promise to David my father be established, for You have made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude. 10 Now give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people; for who can judge this great people of Yours?”
11 Then God said to Solomon: “Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked riches or wealth or honour or the life of your enemies, nor have you asked long life—but have asked wisdom and knowledge for yourself, that you may judge My people over whom I have made you king— 12 wisdom and knowledge are granted to you; and I will give you riches and wealth and honour, such as none of the kings have had who were before you, nor shall any after you have the like.”
James 4:3 tells us that we have not because we ask not, but then when we ask we do not receive because we ask with wrong motives. What are your motives when you ask? Are you asking God for the things that you want or the things you need?
Remember Jesus said seek first the kingdom of heaven and these things shall be added unto you.
You maybe sitting there thinking how do I become part of this, how do I become part of the kingdom. It real simply you simple invite Jesus into your life as your Lord and saviour. If you were to die in the next 24 hours have your considered where your destiny is? Are you destined for eternal life or are you destined for eternal destruction? Don’t fear man because man can only harm the body but fear the Lord who has the ability to destroy both the body and the soul. I would urge to tonight choose life. If that’s you today I would urge to make a public declaration of the Lord. He says he who acknowledges me before man I will acknowledge before my father in heaven
